Culinary magic at Teufelsbrücke – Der Freundeskreis delivers an unforgettable dining experience
“Devil’s claw butter”, “acorn coffee”, “sow thistle puree”, and “forest bread”. These are just a few of the fablelike foods you can expect to sample at the newly-opened pop-up from “Der Freundeskreis” in Andermatt.
Der Freundeskreis is the brainchild of chef Alexander Jakob and TV presenter Maximilian Baumann, two friends with a flair for good food and hospitality, which remains a central focus in their latest project. On their journey touring some of Switzerland’s most unusual locations (including a gas station, a radio studio, and a docked steamship), their latest venture has found its way to the former Teufelsbrücke restaurant, which celebrated its opening last month. Located in the beautifully wild Schöllenen Gorge, Teufelsbrücke is just a 10-minute walk from Andermatt train station. Positioned next to the bridge of the same name, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding natural scenery. This historic landmark, also known as ‘The Devil’s Bridge‘, carries its own Swiss legend that makes for a unique theme for Jakob and Baumann’s project: Freundeskreis im Teufelskreis. From the moment you step inside this fascinating building, you’re greeted by an inviting ambience full of rustic charm. The name “Freundeskreis” symbolically represents the idea of dining among friends, and that’s exactly what it feels like. Guests are made to feel valued, and the team goes above and beyond to ensure your dining experience is nothing short of extraordinary.
The menu, curated by David Krüger, former Head Chef at Restaurant Opera in Zurich and author of the book ‘Ten Seasons: Cooking with Primordial Products’, is a culinary wonder, reflecting a fusion of enchanting flavours that are very much on brand. As a specialist in herbs and roots, Krüger cooks according to the seasons. Thanks to the area’s impressive surrounding flora, Teufelsbrücke is a chef’s paradise, full of plant species carrying an array of intense flavours. It is clear that Krüger and his team are skilled artisans who pay meticulous attention to detail, resulting in beautifully presented dishes that are as visually appealing as they are delicious. Each plate is a work of art, showcasing a harmonious balance of colours, textures, and flavours.
Memorable journey
From the moment you step through the door until the last bite of dessert, you are immersed in a world of culinary excellence, where every aspect of the dining experience is carefully crafted to take your taste buds on a memorable journey.
All guests receive the same menu and eat at the same time, which helps establish the all-important sense of unity and shared experience that the project strives for. However, for those with specific dietary requirements or menu requests, the kitchen takes that into consideration.
The pop-up is open every Wednesday to Saturday from June 21st to September 17th this year and costs 115 francs per person. Reservations can be made now at www.teufelskreis.ch.
